A small change or improvement in employee engagement levels can result in a significant drop in the rate of incidents per exposure hour, Sylvie Tran, Shell USA general manager for safety and environment, revealed.
“We’ve done some research, looking at our Shell people survey, which is an annual survey that we conduct worldwide with our tens of thousands of employees,” Tran said in a presentation at the Offshore Technology Conference.
“Out of the 40-50 elements that we surveyed for, which include recognition, clarity of direction, work-life balance, we have found that employee engagement index has the strongest correlation to improve safety performance,” she added.
Tran highlighted that Shell’s employee engagement index is a collation of different aspects and includes an in-depth look into topics such as the frequency and quality of employee-supervisor engagement.
